It was one of the biggest stories in the January transfer window; Diego Costa had a heated clash with boss Antonio Conte, as Chinese clubs apparently sought he signature. It was a storm in a teacup in the end. The matter was resolved, but only until the end of the season: Costa is most likely on his way out of Stamford Bridge after outstanding offers from China.
The biggest need for Chelsea next year is a striker, and Romelu Lukaku has emerged as a major target. He has announced he won’t be staying with Everton, and has told his manager, Ronald Koeman. Stamford Bridge, where the young Belgian was originally loaned to Everton from, seems a destination favoured by the tabloids, but there’s a lot of evidence to back up why the move would work. He is my best choice assuming Costa goes.
Lukaku is leading the Golden Boot race with 24 goals, with none coming from penalties, and as the race for the top six heated up, he scooped the Premier League Player of the Month for March. It would seem like a good fit playing with fellow Belgian Eden Hazard too, given that Lukaku is sometimes only fed scraps at Goodison Park. Despite the lack of service sometimes, since the 2012-13 season, Lukaku has scored 84 Premier League goals only trailing Sergio Agüero. Of course, Costa may stay and Chelsea fans would be wasting their time fantasizing about Lukaku, but even if Costa doesn’t depart, Lukaku is the perfect fit: in many ways, an upgrade as well as a replacement.
Rumours are he will cost at least 60 million, and I feel he is well worth the money. He has big aspirations for Champions League football, and he will be constantly fighting for titles, somewhere he obviously wants to be. Some may say Lukaku shows a lack of effort, which I say is rubbish. His recent bust-up with teammate Ashley Williams against Manchester United shows the passion he has (he later apologized). There are some that say he only shines as he’s in an average team, which is false. Everton are currently 6th place, fighting for a Europa League spot with Arsenal and Manchester United: Lukaku has practically led them to this point. Compare that with Alexis or Zlatan, both of which have carried their respective sides at points this season, too.
Others may say Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata or Torino’s Andrea Belotti are better options than Lukaku. Belotti reportedly has a £100million release clause, and Morata doesn’t seem like he could be a consistent goalscorer, not to mention that he’s only a backup to Karim Benzema right now. Lukaku is a proven Premier League striker and Lukaku has been consistent year on year in this country.
There have been rumours that Arsenal forward Alexis Sánchez may move to Chelsea, but if he was to join, I’d much rather have him playing on the wing. Romelu Lukaku is enjoying his best year in the Premier League. He is on his way to the Golden Boot and is looking for a bigger club. Chelsea is the best fit for him.
